Figure News: Touhou creator cracks down on merchandising, new figures announced
19 Feb 2011 03:30:31

The Touhou Project has always been in something of an interesting spot as merchandising goes, if only due to its doujin nature. Well, genius drunkard creator ZUN is now establishing new policies for commercial Touhou Project goods, which goes into effect at the end of this month. The new rules include:

-Any dakimakuras and other sexually-charged goods must be approved by ZUN.
-"Overly sexual depictions and defamation against certain individuals, groups, or races that are determined to go against common decency" using Touhou characters are strictly forbidden.
-The Touhou Project characters cannot be used in commercially-produced 2D anime (this is probably in response to how the ANIMATE store chain made a promotional OVA heavily featuring Touhou characters without contacting him).
-ZUN also requires approval for digital-download games featuring the Touhou characters, and the same applies to international distribution of his own games.

Basically, nothing too major. The biggest change will be the lack of Touhou dakimakuras, and even then, doujin producers are still exempt from these regulations. I think that this makes sense - Touhou is constantly getting more and more popular, and it was only a matter of time before someone used the characters in an advertisement without his permission (like ANIMATE). And on the topic of Touhou, three new Touhou figures went up for preorder on Amiami today!

Master of puppets, I'm pullin' your strings, twisting your mind and smashing your dreams...

First up would be Griffon's four-pack of Alice Margatroid's attack-dolls. Armed with swords, butcher's-knives, and other delightful implements, these four would be pretty amusing to have around even without an Alice figure. They're scheduled to ship alongside Griffon's new Alice PVC in May.

OH GOD THE HAT IS EATING HER

Newcomer Ques Q is continuing their foray into Touhou characters with the earth-goddess Suwako Moriya. I must say, I do like the Ques Q figures quite a bit more than Griffon's series - whereas Griffon's look almost like porcelain dolls, these gals just pack a lot more personality.

The strongest? Or maybe the cutest?

Ques Q is also releasing a PVC of that Touhou mainstay, Cirno. They seem to have gotten Cirno's cocky personality down pat with this sculpt, with a confident pose, and just a hint of proud laughter. Suwako ships in June, with Cirno following her in July to cool down your summer.

Anyway, do you think the new Touhou regulations are going to significantly change things? Sound off below!
