MEIKO was initially released in November 2004 for the first VOCALOID engine. She is the first Japanese vocal released for the VOCALOID engine. After V3 update MEIKO now also has an english voicebank.
The illustration was done by Wasshi. Crypton placed this product on the market with a box art that depicted a female illustrated character. This character had nothing to do with the singer's image, but her anime-based appearance appealed to the mainstream audience and the software sold well.
There is no official given age or characteristics. Although, Meiko is usually portrayed as a middle-aged woman who likes to drink One Cup Ozeki (sake).
