Alien was a 1979 horror film directed by Ridley Scott. It concerns the attempts of the crew of the Nostromo to fend off the titular creature (referred to in later films as a Xenomorph). Xenomorphs have a unique and horrifying life style: First, they start as eggs laid by a Queen. When an unlucky organism approaches the egg, a crustacean-looking facehugger bursts out and clamps onto its face, injecting an embryo into the organism's body. A while later, a serpentine-looking infant will burst out of the victim's chest (killing them in the process). This chestburster will then mature into the adult Xenomorph. Xenomorphs also possess some other unique qualities, such as acidic blood and a tendency to resemble the host organism they were born from.
Alien and its sequels have become a staple of pop-culture, appearing in movies, video-games, books, and a spinoff crossover franchise featuring the Predator creatures.
