About me

About me
25 Apr 2011 01:04:33

I call my self the closet otaku because, well it sums me up i guess. I am a 15 year old girl attending a somewhat strict Christian school and i love anything to do with anime, manga and anything cute!!

Like most people with this kind of hobby i collect figures of my favourite anime and manga characters. Some people try to keep this hobby secret (especially as a girl) from their parents and friends, thus the name closet otaku!

My parents know about this hobby of mine but i get the feeling they don't understand it. For example if i recieve things in the post my mum (mostly my mum) just sighs. They say figures are a waste of my money and i should be spending it on other things. I am finding it difficult to fund this hobby because i am currently jobless and having important exams coming up. So i save up my £5 a week pocket money and do extra work around the house and look after my arse of a little brother.

You may be thinking why call yourself the closet otaku if your parents know about your hobby? Well i hide it from my friends. All my friends at school and outside of school are uninterested in anime, manga etc and they have no idea of this hobby of mine. Like if i have a friend round i always hide my figures under my bed or in my wardrobe. My friends do realise i like manga and anime so i always leave my manga on display, my friends at school think i am obsessed with Japan just because i have a K-ON! sticker on my phone or a keyring of a anime character (Haruhi to be exact) and they do think i am strange but they thought that even before i told them about it. I was always one of the 'different' kids at school.

When one of my friends came over i decided to show her my figure collection but i was nervous of what she would think so i only took one out and left it one my desk. This friend was interested in anime but not as much as me. When i shown her my Miku nendoroid she just said 'Your even more sad than me!' and ever since i have continued to hide my hobby.

In the UK people can be well....arrogant, for example my 12 year old brother who says things like 'Get friends' , 'Go play with your Jap shit' and 'Go masturbate to Hatsune miku' which would upset anybody but i just ignore him and his somewhat racist remarks.

I think my dad has accepted my hobby the most but he laughes at the fact that i cosplay and listen to Japanese music. My mum wouldn't go outside with me while i had my costume on and i don't want my friends to know so i am yet to wear my costume outside. Another thing stopping me is the people in the estate where i live, they are basically 'Neds' or 'Chavs' if you are English and would most likely laugh at my costume because they already call me goth or emo depending on what drugs they have been taking.

I hope someone out there understands what i am feeling and took the patience to read this loooong entry of what i like and what i am.

Thank you for reading ^0^

I know how it feels to hide you're figures like that, I used to do it too. Of course I have too many to hide now. You're situation sounds scary to me (people like that are part of what has driven me to be a hikimori) but anyways I wish you the best of luck! ^__^

Everywhere, in all countries, it's the same. When I was fifteen, I used to hide my obsession with Sailor Moon (it was virtually only anime that was broadcasting in Russia).
Things get better, when you grow older. When you're old enough, noone could tell you that you're weird or something. Besides, when you're older, you can go somewhere like conventions and meetings with anime fans.

I know how hard it is to live in unfriendly environment. I root for you, and hope that things will get better. There is always internet, after all! ~^__^~
I'm too old for this shit, ain't I?

Terrible when you do not understand friends, I can say that it is not even friends. A true friend always takes you so crazy crazy how you are indeed. I was lucky in this because my friends also watch anime, cosplay engaged, collect figurines and BJD. We always welcome new members especially collectors! Pay no attention to the words of others about your hobby, it's your hobby and nobody has the right to tell you that it's bad!

I don`t hide my hobby, and nobody of my friends doesn't say that it is strange. My parents say that figures are only waste of money, but they respect my interests.
in my opinion, you must try to talk with your friends about it. If they are realy your friends they won't see some strange in it.

I've never experienced situation like yours, because I was starting to watch anime about the time I entered the University and I've met all of my current friends because of this hobby, but I think, like others said, things will get better in a couple of years ^^

I've read about some japanese anime and manga fans, who abandon their hobby when getting their first job after the graduation and became very ashamed of the things they used to love. I think it's weird -_- I've never hide the fact that I watch anime or collecting the figures from my friends or the people I work with. Of course, not everyone shares my interests and wants to talk about it ^_^', but I believe no one has the right to judge me. Even in my country, where many (or most) people love to judge and hate anything unusual T_T

Anyway, I hope you'll find understanding and also find more people who share your interests *_*
(I hope my English isn't very bad ^_^")

Oh, an active english poster, that's nice.
>attending a somewhat strict Christian school
That can't be good...
> figures are a waste of my money and i should be spending it on other things.
Of course!
Just look around you - you should be trying to get some hash and booze like all the teenagers do
>friends at school think i am obsessed with Japan just because i have a K-ON! sticker
So much for being cattle -_-
I wonder if they'd call the police if they hear you greeting them in moonspeak or something.
>Go masturbate to Hatsune miku
As if that's a bad thing :3
>they are basically 'Neds' or 'Chavs'
Guess that's not the best neighborhood, huh?
A male underage cosplayer could get mugged due to his outfit if I got the Chavs thing right.
