Figure News: Triple Figma preorder-opening
07 Dec 2010 23:03:06
First off, I want to apologize for the lack of articles over the last few days. There have been a number of complications in my life over the last 72 hours, but things have resolved themselves now.
Anyway, Max Factory surprised everyone today by opening three Figma pre-orders simultaneously. I think this may be the first time they've done that. Anyway, let's revisit a Figma mainstay franchise first.
Max Factory is determined to get the entire cast of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS out before the franchise fades into obscurity again, it seems. Because the Figma roster is being expanded with the dragon-summoning loli, Caro Ru Lushe! Caro includes a number of parts standard to the Nanoha series, including an alternate hairpiece, a yelling face, and the usual hands. She also includes effect-parts for both her boost device Kerykeion and an alternate tip for Erio Mondial's Strada. The most interesting accessory of hers though would probably be Friedrich, the tiny dragon (wow, that sounds like a children's book). Friedrich includes both a stand clip (like the one included for Figma Lum's Ten-chan) and an alternate head for him to breathe fire with. One cool accessory would be a figure of the head of her huge dragon Voltaire, but beggars can't be choosers. However, I can't help but think that Caro's tiny size combined with the small size of her accessories means that the 3500Y price tag is a bit excessive. However, I have a feeling that Erio and Caro are gonna hit clearance (given Teana's sales combined with the relatively low popularity of the two), so you may want to take a chance and wait to see. Anyway, Caro is due out in March of next year.
You have no idea how tempting it is to make a crab joke here.
From 2009's love-it-or-hate-it-hit Bakemonogatari comes a Figma of female lead Hitagi Senjougahara. Hitagi includes a number of accessories reasonable to those familiar with her, including an angry/disgusted face and hands holding all manner of office supplies (because it's common knowledge that Hitagi poops office supplies). There's also an alternate head with her long hair tied into a purple ponytail. Max Factory also confirmed another future release:
Oh yeah, look at him strut. Haters gonna hate indeed.
Joining Hitagi for all manner of hijinks is main character Araragi Koyomi. While I'm gonna pass on Hitagi, I'm getting Koyomi if only to support the idea of male Figmas. Besides, there's also the possibility that more characters from Bakemonogatari will get Figma-tized in the future (I'd love a Figma Meme or Tsubasa). Anyway, Hitagi is coming to store shelves in April, while no release date was given for Ararararagi. Last but (probably) least is...
This raises so many questions. Why would Max Factory think that a Figma of Danny Choo's mascot would sell? Why would they make ANOTHER generic schoolgirl (this one doesn't even have an interesting backstory, no less), when that's been one of their biggest causes of criticism? Why did they choose to release it via normal means, through all the usual retailers? Regardless, this is happening. Danny Choo's mascot Mirai is getting a mass-release Figma. Something tells me that this thing is gonna be the queen of shelfwarmers - it's not from a source with any substantial fandom, it's a horribly generic design, and there are very few accessories (a handkerchief, a laptop, a camera, and a Figma-sized doll). Given that Max Factory has learned that they can experiment a bit and still make successful Figmas (look at the sales for the Black*Rock Shooter and Summer Wars Figmas if you need proof), this seems like a bit of a step back. Anyway, if you're a big fan of Danny Choo or this generi-ko, she's getting a June release.
Anyway, anyone looking forward to some Pokémon battles dragon-training with Erio, stapling with Hitagi, or... moeblobbing-around with Mirai? Sound off below!
