Figure News: Black*Rock Shooter RPG to include Figma *UPDATED*
25 Nov 2010 00:39:35

Pretty big update today, especially considering how much of a soft spot a lot of Shelf users have for Black*Rock Shooter. Remember how they showed a teaser for a B*RS JRPG a couple of months back? Well, a new trailer has come out.

Honestly, the game looks very... different from both the OVA and huke's artwork. To be honest, it really looks like some sort of "Gears of War - with special guest star, Black*Rock Shooter" to me. Maybe that's just the vibe I'm getting, but I'll leave it up to you guys to form your own opinions on the game.

Regardless, they also revealed some information about the game's release. First off, it's going to be exclusive to the PSP, and due for a Summer 2011 release. Second, huke IS still on board for the project, having designed the new appearance of B*RS, as well as this new character.

Busou*Rock Shinki and goth-loli Yuki Nagato!?

*UPDATE* Developer Imageepoch announced that, while it's not 100% set in stone yet, they're working with Nippon Ichi Systems America (international publishers of the Disgaea series, among other JRPGs) to establish a deal allowing NISA to localize and internationally release all of the studio's future releases. If this deal goes through, then it's pretty likely that this game will receive an English translation and a North American release. Not confirmed, however, is whether their past releases (Fate/extra, among others) apply to the NISA deal.

The last tidbit is that the game is going to be released in two editions. The standard version of the game will sell for the usual MSRP of around 6,000Y. However, for around 9,000Y, you'll be able to get the special edition, which includes a Figma of "Black*Rock Shooter (White ver.)." No word on what exactly this is, although I'm imagining it'll be something like the Figma equivalent of this custom Nendoroid.

But I know many people don't like game-bundle Figmas, simply due to how brutal they are on the wallet. Well, a user of /toy/ has discovered an interesting phenomenon concerning the upcoming, also-game-exclusive Figma Misaka Mikoto.

Yes, this is three of the Misaka Figma, not out 'til January. Yet they're now popping up on eBay, as well as a number of Chinese online sellers (you need a proxy, but the prices are low enough that they come out to around normal Figma price). Despite what you'd think, it turns out that these are genuine Figmas, being sold months ahead of release, without their packaging or included PSP game, for half the price. How is this happening? Nobody really knows, although the common theory is that they "fell off the truck," so to speak, or that some of the factory workers made an extra batch on their own time for resale. It's been happening with other Figmas, including Nodoka, King Kazma, and Saber Lily. Of course, the fact that these were probably stolen by production line workers for resale raises a whole new crop of questions, but I'm a reporter, not a philosopher, so I'll once again leave you to form your own opinions on this somewhat dubious trend.

I knew something like this would happen with the game. Just because BRS works best as a mysterious character doesn't mean she should be a gust star in her own franchise.

I might still end up getting the bundle anyway.

I... don't get it at all. It doesn't look anything like what I'd expect from what I know of BRS so far. It just seems irrelevant and ridiculous. Wasn't this supposed to be about some alien invasion? Looks like just dudes in military stuff to me. It also doesn't look dark and gritty enough, like Huke's artworks are. It's just a shiny semi-collapsed city. From a company branch called JRPG I was expecting something more... JRPGish. Rarg, I'm just ranting because I'm disappointed, don't mind me. :/

Only reason I care at all at this point is my weakness for figmas. >.>;; I kind of expected them to do a bundle, and lo' and behold here it is. Can't wait to see more on this, though I'm not entirely sure what to hope for. If it's like that custom Nendo, it would look pretty nice, but I'd feel terrible for shelling out that much for a recolor - especially a recolor of a figure I already have.

Eh. BRS, guys with guns, big city. That's a lil' bit boring. And trailer does nothing - I'm still trying to understand what the french toast is going on there. I'm disappointed. It makes me want to play Coded Arms, you know.

ノーコメント。Oh well, anyways...

What's that all about? The game doesn't feel like JRPG at all. What are those armed men doing here? Get back to Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War or whatever! I'm confused. Well, actually there were two things I liked - the background music (is it an original video?) and how the ending phrase "Black Rock Shooter The Game" was voiced o.O

When it comes to the mysterious unbundled figmas... I've never thought such things could happen in Japan. Gosh...
The rain beats hard at my window

Well, the Figmas (like most figures) are made in China, so it seems that they're getting out right off the production line. They usually begin making the Figmas a few months before their scheduled release, so it makes sense that Misaka would be in production around now.

I just remembered wasn't this supposed to be an RPG made by the people who made the Persona games? I think i'm even more confused now.

Yeah, it's being marketed as a JRPG. Personally, I think a Devil May Cry-ripoff would be a good way to do a Black*Rock Shooter game - she always struck me as the type who'd be running around shootin' and slashin' foes rather than waiting in turn-based battles.

The thing is a game like that could actually work well as an RPG. But I still think an Arc system works style fighting game would best.
