Figure News: Touhou Figma Updates; Otacute Issues

Figure News: Touhou Figma Updates; Otacute Issues
14 Sep 2010 20:24:36

Yo, guys! Today's quite a good day for fans of the quirky doujin shooters of the Touhou Project, as there's big news relating to Figmas for the series. First off, Figma Sakuya Izayoi is now shipping.

Maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion and waifu of Dio Brando, Sakuya includes six knives, a mop, three faces, and a sheet of semi-solid decals to portray the emotions from the games.

ZA WARUDO!

People who've ordered her will probably get a shipping confirmation shortly. Speaking of Touhou, Mikatan was so kind as to reveal more information on the next Figma of the Touhou series: Aya Shameimaru!

SYAMEIMARU! SYAMEIMARU!

The devoted-but-gossipy tengu reporter includes a number of accessories for all your interviewing needs, including her crow familiar, a camera, and a notebook.

Nevermore...?

She also comes with two attachments for her stand - one that functions as a mini-stand for the crow (similar to the Ten-chan included with Figma Lum), and one that allows you to attach her own wings.

Enter attack formation!

But it wouldn't be a Figma unless it came with extra faces, and Aya is no exception. She has a cocky, smiling face reminiscent of a certain Miss Suzumiya, a calmer smile, and this... distressed face.

"Oh god, I think I'm laying an egg!"

Like Reimu, Marisa, and Sakuya before her, Aya is an exclusive to a select few stores - NicoNico Chokuhan, Anibro, Toranoana, and Animate. So rev up those proxies! She's going to cost 2800 yen + proxy fees (so probably around $40USD before shipping), and is due out in January. Of course, Otacute will carry her as well. But you may have second thoughts about Otacute after reading this...

Otacute recently pulled a move that some consider quite unfair on people who ordered Figma Sakuya Izayoi from them. They recently sent out an email to those who ordered her saying that they've changed the price of the item from $29.90 to $39.90, and that you'll have to pay the additional $10 if you want her. While the decision isn't economically unsound (given that Reimu and Marisa were $40 from them, and the yen's been soaring in value this summer), it also seems like a pretty shady move to pull on your customers. If you've ordered Sakuya and this price hike changed your mind, they'll cancel the order if you ask (which is unusual for them). With their beer-box misadventures, "special sources" for obtaining exclusives, ominous customer-service messages, and now sudden price increases, maybe the Otakuza jokes aren't completely unfounded after all. Either way, I'm probably gonna use a proxy for Aya - that way, I can snag an exclusive Figuarts or something nifty from Akiba while I'm at it.

So what about you guys? Anyone excited about Shameimaru or disappointed by the Otacute incident? Sound off in the comments!

I almost ordered Sakuya from them too! I've always been unsure of ordering from them since I herd of the beer box incidents.

I wish that all Touhou stuff wasn't so limited it's hard for me to justify going out of my way to get figures of characters that my only connection to is they shoot a bajillion dots at me. :/

That's why I mainly plan on sticking to Figma Reimu and Marisa (MAYBE Aya). Of course, my major exception is the Pink Company figures. I love those little figures to bits. :3

Also, are the pictures showing up on your end? They're now appearing as those question-mark-squares here.

That's odd... I'll try tweaking it a bit.

Update: Try going to the Figma Blog. That fixed them for me...

Pictures not showing up for me either. :<

I almost preordered Sakuya, but now I'm glad I didn't. I did get the Remilia Nendo from Otacute though, hopefully she'll get in safely.

I'll probably pick Sakuya up later off a stateside seller. I definitely want Aya, but I'm not sure if I could stomach Otacute anymore. All these horror stories have made me very nervous of them. I'll probably end up getting her stateside as well.

Friggin' exclusives. *mumble mumble*

Alright, I'm using a different server for the Aya pictures, and working on getting the Sakuyas up. Try refreshing.

Nowadays with Otacute, things should be fine once the package is shipped out. They stopped using beer-boxes after customs got confused, and you'll probably receive a little trinket like some Revoltech stickers.

If you really want to order Sakuya or Aya, I've found that Yokatta is pretty good. I was able to find Reimu with them for about $50 shipped, and they can find pretty much any Japan-only item you want (so if there's an exclusive Figuarts or some doujinshi you want, they can get it for you).

Update: All the images should be working. Still new to the news-formatting... X3

The pictures are working great now, good job! :D

I've yet to actually have a problem with Otacute's shipping. I got my Vocaloid puchis through them safely (and the boyfriend's unfriendly mail people, which is the real miracle) and the figma Saber Extra box set with figma Shamal, which I had the balls to ship SAL. Many would call me crazy for an Otacute/SAL combo. XD But more often than not it's the people on your end of the mail that would screw it up, and I trust my mail people. In 30 shipments I've yet to even get a dented box.

Since it's January, I'll probably just cave and go with Otacute anyways. They seem to be trying to make some effort to improve themselves and haven't directly screwed me over yet, so I'll probably give them another chance. I'm sure by January they'll be straightened out a bit better. The Flandre Nendo is also supposed to be out that month, and there's no way I can pass on her. Might as well get them in one go. I'll keep Yokatta in mind though, maybe they can find me one of those Yubari Melon Bear plushys~ ;_;

Everyone who was actually thinking Sakuya was only 30$ really should have thought it through more. I waited because I knew something wasn't right with that price and I was not surprised when I got the email. I paid for it with no grudge at all because I knew that was the right price and it was still cheaper than Yokatta (who wanted 4200 yen for her which is far more than the 38$USD Otacute wanted). Otacute gets a lot of flack but people forget how much of a small operation they are, and they service primarily the foreign market unlike Amiami and Hobby Search who serve Japan and foreigners. The fact that they can provide preorders on exclusives that doesn't require me to pay upfront helps a lot, and often times they are cheaper than middlemen. I feel bad for them, in most cases a company would honor the pricing mistake and absorb the cost, but as a small operation where the difference of eating 5 bucks vs 400 can mean whether you can pay your employees that week or not, I understand whole heartily that they couldn't honor the price, so they preferred to allow order cancellations.

I some what regret having taken part in helping create the running gag for Otakuza, because some people take it seriously when Otacute makes those small mistakes, instead of just considering them to be a regular small business trying to just make it by.

Otacute is definitely the best choice for just ordering a single Touhou Figma, but I normally use proxies due to the ability to simultaneously obtain other items not listed on the major Japanese sites (things like Pokémon MC figures, which I also collect).

As for the order cancellations, that's my biggest issue with the way Otacute runs their site. Why don't they just let each account cancel up to three orders or something? It's not like an exclusive Figma or Figuarts isn't going to sell. And the fact that even if you have multiple pre-ordered items shipping in the same month, they won't ship them in the same box is just plain silly.

As for the Otakuza thing, of course I don't take it seriously. But you've gotta admit, intentional or not, there's a certain mobster-ish way they go about their business ("I strongly advise against escalating the issue with Paypal"). X3

Otakuza is a joke that started on 4chan's /toy/ after people started noticing a number of amusing tidbits about Otacute - things like them saying that they have "special sources" for exclusives, shipping a few orders in beer boxes (this happens much less often that people joke about, though), and the site's owner being referred to as "Boss Yuhei." As a result, people joke that the site is run by the Yakuza.

I don't actively dislike Otacute by any means - they're a great choice for when the Big Three are sold out of an item, and they're one of the only international sellers to carry exclusive items. But they're not exactly perfect by any means.
