Lets start with a cruel story!
Suzu from Kotobukiya is one of my favorite figure. Although she happened to become a very unfortunate one. Sit closer, kids...
...I got her from HLJ. Broken. As you can see, she has a big ponytail. It's also quite heavy... So, I think you've guessed what happened. Well, imagine my sorrow when I received my beloved Suzu with her hair broken away. I immediately contacted HLJ and got an explanation, that the guilt belonged to EMS. They recommended me to contact my local post office. Have you ever tried to persuade a post office to recover losses? Ah, it only made me even more upset. Russian EMS suddenly appeared to be so impolite. At first, they even didn't try to listen to me and just passed the buck. After a series of calls, my claim was finally accepted and... I was asked to wait for 2 months (!) for them to make an investigation. They also noted, they really don't believe I'll get anything back.
What did I do then, you wonder? Well, I bought a glue and stick a ponytail back to my poor Suzu. There is a ribbon, so I managed to make it look as good as new. Happy End? Ah, wait a bit.
After 3 months I got a letter signed by Director General (Russian EMS). No guilt. No money. Ahh... So predictable. But 2 days later I was unexpectedly contacted by HLJ. Guess what? EMS Japan admitted their guilt and transmited money back to shop. That is how I got another figure (a different one) for free.
Anyway, I hope, no one from 'shelf' users will ever barge into such unpleasant situation.

I haven't had any experiences like that yet... thankfully TAT; I would've probably been annoyed if that happened

It wasn't only about the money. It was - you know - unfair. And I'm the one, who has always been fighting for justice :P How pathetic :)) And I have to admit, I was very glad to get this compensation.

So far, the only damages I get are dents on the boxes... Then again, I usually buy figures locally ^^;

The most prominent anime shop here, however, sucks because they sell mostly bootlegs, or self-produced ripoffs (like say, wallets with scans of artbooks printed on them) -- but they get good business because their goods are cheap compared to original items and most people don't have money to spend on originals -- or are just plain ignorant.
There are a couple of stores that sell all genuine figures though, one shop I frequent in particular is Wasabi Toys :) They're pretty nice people and they offer good customer service. Their store is quite far from my place so I have my figures delivered :)
