Music recommendation needed!

Music recommendation needed!
04 Mar 2010 18:19:58

Hey guys, can you suggest me some good music?
The thing is I have to do tons of mechanical, but laborous work. It’s not only MyAnimeShelf, but also lots of Japanese. So I need a kind of very delicate music which won’t grab my attention from my studying, but help me to feel relaxed and comfortable. I’ve already played all my CDs to death, which are new-age, classical music and anime OSTs. So, any recommendations? As to genre it could be anything as long as it fits the requiremants above. Heavy Metal definitely doesn’t. Onegai shimasu!

First thing I think of when asking for relaxing music is the OST for Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. I mean, one of the alternate titles for the series is "Quiet Country Cafe" so that should be a little indication of what it's like. The soundtrack is mostly made up of instrumental tracks with a lot of soft string instruments. Very lovely.

Going through the rest of the music I have on my computer, here's everything else I have on here that I think might fill your request:

Chrono Cross OST: Most of it has a nice fusion of Celtic and Islander music styles. A few of the songs might be a little more high-energy than you'd like, but nothing to distracting.

Escaflowne: There are a lot of soundtracks for this series and all of them work pretty well as good background music, though some of the songs do get pretty epic like Dance of Curse. But again, not really too distracting.

Final Fantasy Potion: There are two of these Potion compilation CD's out and they're both specifically put together to have a mix of relaxing music from the series. Most of the music on both discs comes from previous Arranged CD's for the series such as Love Will Grow, Celtic Moon, Dear Friends, and the various Piano Collections for the games. You may also want to look into tracking down those Arranged CD's.

Fruits Basket, Four Seasons - Song For Ritsuko Okazaki: Very nice, lovely sounding music. Though the CD can be kind of sad if you know the meaning behind the "Song for Ritsuko Okazaki" subtitle of the CD....

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki o Kakeru Shoujo): More good background music.

Haibane Renmei OST - Hanenone: Good Celtic folk style music. Very relaxing.

Nodame Cantabile, La Folle Journee Selection & Mongoose Box : A crap load of classical music. La Folle Journee Selection is made up of 6 CD's and the Mongoose Box has 5 discs.

Rob Dougan - Furious Angels: Only thing on my list not related to anime or video games! Rob Dougan is a Techno DJ/Composer guy who is also known as Rob D. His most well known song is probably Clubbed to Death (Kurayamino Variation) which was in the first Matrix movie and a few other things. The US release of his Furious Angels CD has two discs, one where most of his songs included vocals done by himself while Disc 2 had Instrumental versions of all of those vocal tracks. Some of the songs may be a little distracting, but I think they'd still work pretty well. He has a very soothing voice so Disc 1 should also work just fine.

Wolf's Rain: Music done by the same person who did the Escaflowne soundtracks, Yoko Kanno. She makes a lot of good music. Again, some songs may be more relaxing than others on the soundtracks (there are two OST's), but if everything you listen to is down-beat you might start to lose motivation. ^_^

Xenogears OST: And my suggestion is the Xenogears soundtrack. This is actually done by the same composer as the Chrono Cross soundtrack, Yasunori Mitsuda, probably my favorite video game composer. June Mermaid is one of my favorite instrumental songs of all time. It always brings tears to my eyes. :)

And that's all. I probably could have given you more recommendations, but I don't have my entire CD collection ripped to my computer and my physical CD's are all boxed up already, like most of my stuff. =P

That's what I call pluvia33's style! :D
No offense, I'll try to find all the titles you mention one by one to see if it moves me. Hmm, I can see now they are in alphabetic order... what should I start with? Do you have a favorite one? Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou's OST?

Haha, no offense taken. It's nice to be known for something, I guess. ^_^"
As far as wanting something nice relaxing to play in the background, YKK is definitely my favorite. Like I said it was the first thing I thought of when reading your post, so try finding that one first if you can. As for everything else, they're in alphabetical order because I was looking through all of the artists in my Media Player library to find other music.

I'm really curious to hear what you think of Rob Dougan so I'd say try him next. The Potion CD's are very nice so they should also be pretty high on your queue. I found a pretty nice site about Final Fantasy Music that should be helpful. Here's the entries for Potion and Potion 2. They're nice pages because they also have links for each track to the CD the song was originally taken from. Aside from that I'd say just go in order or pick and chose based on the descriptions I gave. Hope you enjoy the music. ^_^

Ok, today's evening is Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou Eve ^_^ Well... I like the main theme and Fuwa Fura song (the one with vocal in it). But basically I can't really say this is my type of music. I usually like it more anxious or disturbing. Ah, anyways I need lots of music, so I'll keep it. Thank you! Let's move on, there is still a long list of music waiting :)

You could try Selected Ambient Works 85–92 and Selected Ambient Works Volume II by Aphex Twin. The first one may have songs that are faster than you are looking for the second should be what you are looking for.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I didn't expect I got so many titles. Ah, but it's great, cause I'm doomed to study for the next 2 years or so. Everything would be useful. I'll tell you my opinion on particular artists and songs a bit later.
Thanks again. You are my saviors! :)

I could recommend some music, but I really think you shouldn't listen to music during studies. It may seem more fun, but as for me, it really distracts, and my attention severely decreases. This is true both for work and Japanese studies.

Formerly I used to keep music on almost all day long, so it was kind of hard to endure silent studies, but I felt that music really shifts focus away.

Now I usually only keep music on when I'm really tired, but still need to study/do something, so music keeps me from falling asleep.
